At 88, Poker Legend Doyle Brunson Is Still Bluffing. Or Is He?
- ddingus 4y agoI love this guy. Learning his method of play has utility well beyond the game. The game of poker, especially the no limit hold-em' type, can change how you think. Someone close to me watched Brunson, read the books and found out they have some talent for the game. Made 5 figures that year. In my view, Brunson along with the mathematician friend he has mentioned a few times are excellent ambassadors to the game of Poker. (I am sorry the other fellows name escapes me at the moment. Brunson said, "He tells me why I play the way I do.") Brunson has a huge empirical and sociological view of the game. In programmer speak, has the right lookup tables and people skills to be quite successful.[0] The math can derive a similar set of data minus a few decades playing poker in the more questionable and dangerous parts of Texas. However you arrive at the technical knowledge of the odds in play, it's the people skill that makes a player truly devastating. Brunson is a keen observer of people and a top notch analyst of their behavior. There are some players in Poker who lean ultra hard on the people side of things. I've tried it, and my own sense of others isn't bad. Totally possible to play solid on reads alone with players who don't bottle themselves up and the piece linked to this discussion talks about that. Modern players tend to close up, get into the math and lean hard on that aspect of the game. It's far less fun that way, and I think, harder. Can be much harder. One other thing: His online poker site was top notch and had attracted a great quality of player. Was enjoyable and lucrative for good players. Frist, near the end of the Bush administration, attacked the game and delegitimized it opening the door for far less reputable actors. Ruined it for many. Sad day. [0] I want to be clear in that I am not implying Brunson has some deficiency or other. He's as sharp as they come. I really meant to speak to his roots in the game and where key strengths are. I've too much respect for Brunson to say otherwise. Can't get this wrong.
