This is such a stupid article. It spends 95% of its text talking about events in history and then concludes by saying "Joe Biden bad". No evidence except a lazy swipe at the 2020 riots, no salient points beyond "oh we're all doomed because of ideology", nothing. I feel dumber for having even skimmed this.
The truth is that ideology has poisoned JOURNALISM. The West is doing just fine. But journalists seem to have failed to realize that their jobs have fundamentally changed. In the past, when information was expensive, they played an important role of disseminating info to people that they otherwise would not have gotten. But in the information age, when all info is free, they are nothing more than propagandists, trying to come up with engrossing stories to keep you hooked. People are realizing this more and more and I expect the gap between journalism and reality to keep growing wider.
- bckr 4y agoThis article would be more convincing if it mentioned more than just the far left ideology (and, indeed, had the honesty to admit that Biden is not a leftist, or even an idealogue). There are also center and right ideologies at work in America. Center ideologies focus on "bringing democracy to the world" (which probably just means American hegemony in practice). Right ideologies are focused on rewriting history to make the USA an evangelical nation, not merely a protestant Christian-majority country. So while the first few paragraphs are interesting, it amounts to, as you mentioned, propaganda.
- _zzaw 4y agoI don’t even read the unherd links anymore. They’re invariably just preachy, resent-saturated tirades that exemplify most of the qualities they’re railing against. It’s admittedly amusing to read extremists from one side being mad about the extremism from the other, but I just don’t have the energy for that kind of energy anymore.
