Solar "all-in-one" inverters are a good alternative to a UPS and fairly inexpensive. (~$400 for 1kw). Solar panels aren't required, just bring your own battery (lead acid or LiFePo)- you could even pull the batteries from your existing UPS.

Do they also charge and balance the batteries, or is that something that you need to do separately?

  Also, do they have a config to stop pulling power, before draining the battery flat?

    I guess not since this is hacking together things outside of their intended purpose. Look in boat stores for battery charge level protection breakers.
