They felt bad because a friend looked down on their cooking habits, so they tried to go along, and eventually gave up on it. In fact they decided that snobby attitudes about cooking aren't worth appeasing. You act as if it's your job to tell them as much when that's what the whole article was about. All you're doing is being an anti-snob snob.
