I found it amusing helping my friend "cheat" at Pokemon Go a while ago. There's a popular walkway over the river full of gyms and stuff in the game, closed at night. We went under it in the middle of the night on my boat and he took over all the gyms. Sure you could just spoof your gps, but this was a lot more fun.

The problem is that taking over gyms like that is useless. After the first one is evicted you'll hit the coin limit and the rest won't earn anything. There's no point in taking over multiple gyms unless you expect to be kicked out quickly or you can spread them out and some of them are in remote enough areas to last a day or more before getting kicked out.
