Very cool finding with the flow. It explains why when you take some round container and freeze water in it, the ice will be crystal clear at the edges, but it will not be crystalized so cleanly in the middle (turbulence once edges are frozen) Who knows, perhaps there's even some laminar flow happening at the edges :)
