Nearly half of U.S. murders go unsolved
- dang 4y agoWe changed the url from https://www.cbsnews.com/crime-without-punishment/ https://www.cbsnews.com/crime-without-punishment/, which appears to be just the video, to the associated text article. It unfortunately autoplays the video though.
- nwellnhof 4y agoFor reference, in Germany the rate is about 95%. https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/152525/umfrage/entwicklung-der-polizeilichen-aufklaerungsquote-bei-mord-seit-1995/ https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/152525/umfrag...
- Originami 4y agoAnd the rate for White victims in the USA is 87% (from within the article). Fairly similar. The overall rate is brought down by the volume of black victims (predominantly killed by others blacks), and the resistance to supporting police within those same communities.
- 11101010001100 4y agoThe point stands: comparing nation-level statistics. Of course, one is free to choose an arbitrary level of granularity.
- calvinmorrison 4y agoFWIW Comparing the United States to Micronesia is also a bad idea. Or to say, Life in moscow is sure different than in Kamchatka
- JonShartwell 4y agoOther countries also have groups who have historically been discriminated against and the numbers show they do a much better job at solving these crimes than the US
- Andaith 4y agoIf they're not solving the crimes, how do you know they're "predominantly killed by other blacks"? Also, why is there resistance to supporting police in those communities?
- Fargoan 4y agoMost murders aren't random. Neighborhoods are segregated.

- swearwolf 4y agoYou’ve never heard of “snitches get stitches?”
- Manuel_D 4y agoMostly from reports of witnesses. Even if the murder goes unsolved, the witnesses can provide a description.
- feet 4y ago"Black on black crime" is a talking point that racists in the US absolutely love to toss around while totally ignoring the fact that drug laws have been used as an excuse to terrorize minority communities for decades
- helloworld11 4y agoand your second (valid) point doesn't change by one iota the fact that black on black violent crime is extremely pervasive in these communities and also the cause of the vast majority of murders of african americans. The FBI Uniform crime statistics, derived in part from solved murders and other violent crimes bear this out too. What you say about racist policies may be true but no white outsider is putting a gun into the hands of certain blacks and making them shoot other blacks. One sound criticism of BLM has been exactly this, a complete aversion for political ideological reasons to placing any focus on things that black communities themselves can work to change internally.
- mr_toad 4y agoThe unsolved rate is still 2.6 times higher.
- jjeaff 4y agoFear of interacting with police might be a more apt description.
- bergenty 4y agoI would allocate some blame to a more lackadaisical approach by the police to solving crimes that happen in black communities in addition to your point. The reason there is resistance to supporting the police is also because of the history of how police have continued to treat those communities.
- alexfromapex 4y agoJust playing devil’s advocate, the US and Germany are different in many ways. More lax gun laws in US, almost 4 times the population in the US, vastly larger size of the country to name a few.
- rschachte 4y agoHow is that playing devils advocate? That just furthers the point that the US has a ton of terrible policies and regulations that lead to systemic disaster in so many areas
- alexfromapex 4y agoThe definition of devils advocate is “ a person who expresses a contentious opinion in order to provoke debate or test the strength of the opposing arguments”. I posted a contentious opinion by saying that direct USA/Germany demographics comparison is a false equivalence and was hoping for more discussion around that instead of going in the direction that the USA has bad policies.
- kelseyfrog 4y agoHow is your devil's advocate position different from your own?
- alexfromapex 4y agoBecause I don’t care either way and therefore don’t have an opinion? I just posted an opposing viewpoint in hopes that there could be a well rounded discussion. Germany and the USA is an apples to oranges comparison.
- moralestapia 4y agoSorry, I don't speak german and can't understand the linked post. Is that 95% solved or unsolved?
- freyr 4y agoThe rate of unsolved murders is about 5%.
- bediger4000 4y agoAnd despite an uptick in 2020 and 2021, the number of murders is much lower than in 1995, say. No reason for a pack of improvement.
- throwaway81523 4y agoThis suggests the increase is due to political instability: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-02-26/why-is-the-u-s-murder-rate-spiking https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-02-26/why-is...
- rufus_foreman 4y agoThe US homicide rate in 2020 was a little lower than 1995, and higher than any year since the mid 90s, according to CDC data: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/10/27/what-we-know-about-the-increase-in-u-s-murders-in-2020/ft_21-010-19_murderrate_3a/ https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/10/27/what-we-kno... 2021 will be even higher.
- bediger4000 4y agoGreat, US police have weathered a storm like this before! Why is their performance so terrible?
- feet 4y agoThey're too busy busting people for drug crimes which don't harm others Instead of solving things like murder and theft Make drugs legal, make the cops do actual work to actually help people instead of just harm them
- tcfhgj 4y agoThat's not the reason. Drugs crimes are investigated in Germany as well, still 95% rate
- feet 4y agoHow much money and time on investigating each: drug crimes or murders? How does the way american police investigate drug crimes in some communities impact the way that community cooperates with other investigations? But anyhow, drugs should be entirely legal no matter which way you slice it. Humans should have bodily autonomy, prohibition causes far more harm than it ever prevented
- calvinmorrison 4y agoAttacking the wrong problem. Most black market crime is related to government monopolies. Pharmaceuticals, Illegal Drugs, Gambling, Protection rackets, these are all things only the government is allowed to do. Or to quote some shitty anarchist band: "Ever since there's been laws, there's been criminals"
- ALittleLight 4y agoI don't want to watch this CBS video, but my understanding is this stat is based on clearance rate (i.e the police have solved the case to their satisfaction) which comes before any attempt at conviction.
- plantwallshoe 4y agoIs it possible part of this drop is due to increased rigor? It’s a lot harder to pin a murder on some unlucky minority person near the crime scene with DNA, cell phone tracking, and cameras everywhere.
- justin66 4y agoPerhaps keeping smart people from joining the police [1] is having exactly the effect one should expect it to have. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31720214 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31720214
- dasil003 4y agoThey need more McNulty and Bunk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS6pE88Xg3s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS6pE88Xg3s
- feet 4y agoIf smart people joined the police, they would probably cease being just goons for the state/those in power to use against those they don't like defeating their current purpose Smart police aren't going to go around brutalizing peaceful protestors or framing minorities for drug crimes
- BMc2020 4y agoLast I read 1/2 of all murders come pre solved, because the killer a) calls the police and says I just killed someone, or b) kill themselves.
- WarOnPrivacy 4y agoSynopsis: As more surveillance/private data gets firehosed to US LEO, fewer violent crimes are solved.
- fzeroracer 4y agoThere's so many issues as to why this is the case, but ultimately it all boils down to the fact that there is zero repercussions for bad cops. As others mentioned, the police actively filter out smart cops from the ranks. They viciously pull rank around and protect bad cops, and oust any cops that threaten said bad cops. Then when they refuse to do their job, we reward them by paying them more. Giving them larger budgets. Giving them more toys to wave around. Like here in Austin the police are useless. You can report a crime with video evidence of the person and they do nothing. Look at Uvalde where they refused to even pretend to be the heroes they're portrayed as and the budget they have there is insane. It's exceedingly frustrating when every single encounter you've had with the police is outright negative and nothing is being done to fix it.
