Curious, I couldn't find any information on how to make bubbles in space. I assume it will need compressed gas from Earth? Did they determine how much gas? The actual MIT website is fancy, but lacks specifics.
- intrasight 4y agoI had pitched a similar idea here on HN a few years ago, and have recently done some more design. Rather than "bubbles", I would have a robot go capture metallic asteroids, and use them as the raw material to build a sun screen. I personally cannot think of any viable alternative to building some kind of sun screen at L1. My new design envisions a robot spider which basically weaves a web.

- intrasight 4y agoAlternative?
- ncmncm 4y agoBuild out renewables. Displace fossil fuel burning. Unblock capital for building out renewables. Stop subsidizing fossil fuel extraction. Tax fossil fuel extraction and burning, and use the money to subsidize build-out. Outlaw fossil fuel burning where taxes would not suffice.
- intrasight 4y agoWhile I agree that a high carbon tax is both necessary and desirable, I think it's just too late. Would have had to have that a decade ago.
- undersuit 4y agoA gas will fill the container it is in. The pressure of these bubbles would be very low, maybe just enough to counter the gravity of the balloon.
