This is the beginning of the great dealer attrition. With EV's not having all the oil changes, muffler changes, cat converter changes and with braking accomplished about 50% regeneratively and 50% friction based - fewer brake jobs - all little dealer support cash cows, and now Ford will sell direct as Tesla pioneered it must happen. It will operate is parallel with IC car declines, so that in ~~30 years dealers will be mostly gone. They will have to manage a declining industry along with gas stations, as charging stations emerge - some will switch, some will fold - all will lobby their elected parasites...
- gnicholas 4y agoAssuming recalls continue to happen (I think Ford has already had these for their new Mustangs), who will do this work in the future? It seems inefficient to maintain a massive network of dealerships for the purpose of recall repairs, but who else would manufacturers and customers trust to do this work?
- aurizon 4y agoYes, this is a valid point - Tesla has recalls, but I have no idea how their per vehicle rate compares with IC cars - and they perform over the air software updates that in IC cars might need a dealer trip. When all cars have similar degrees of software dependency they will probably act similarly. I wonder if greater software use will reduce recalls? The fact remains that a large structure will be needed for recall maintenance. Logically recall specialists will emerge with the ability to recall any makers cars for a fee in the same shop as dealers become more and more marginalised with time?
