So how did that work for you on your mobile? I find it funny that people are perfectly fine using the appstore and not being able to just download apps from a website (easily) on mobile (amny even say it is a feature), but when it is not possible on desktop than it is somehow a massive usability issue that users never be able to adjust to (apart from the fact that MS and Apple also try to push you to their appstores).
