- alsaaro 4y agoCurious there was a massive spike in reported hate crimes against blacks (45%), to 2,871 (2020) from 1,972 (2019). Strangely, Alexander writes: "there was no corresponding rise in hate crimes the way I would expect if this was whites targeting blacks, so I think the perpetrators were most likely also black." Alexander is a smart guy, and he almost certainly found the same data I did, so I suspect his use of the word "expect" is doing a lot of work here.
- derbOac 4y agoTheres a lot of that unfortunately. For example, when discussing foreign trends he's similarly sloppy, acting like "I searched Google a bit and this is the first I found". But rates went up in Brazil in 2020 — this had substantial news coverage at the time — and it doesnt take long to find this: https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/05/20/homicide-murder-violence-united-states-latin-america-caribbean/ https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/05/20/homicide-murder-violenc... I also don't think it's reasonable to expect psychosocial effects of lockdown issues to just pop up immediately in March 2020 like a light switch. I'm not really convinced the effect wasn't there but I'm also not convinced it was, and think Alexander was being a bit too armchair about the whole thing in a way that made me wonder what else he was missing.
- EdwardDiego 4y agoYeah, the expectation of an immediate effect from lockdown struck me as rather odd.
- vanattab 4y agoHas anyone here witnessed asian hate in response to covid. I have seen much reported about it but have really ever witnessed any myself.
- mushbino 4y agoI lived in a Chinese neighborhood at the time and there weren't any hate crimes. I feel like news agencies find a hot topic latch on and blow it out of proportion. Fear sells like nothing else.
- windsignaling 4y agoYour own personal experience is not a good indicator of the happenings in the rest of the world.
- mushbino 4y agoThe question was literally "Has anyone here witnessed an Asian hate crime?" I have not. I was not saying they didn't happen since I'm very aware they have. Somehow they magically stopped in SF Chinatown when SFPD was forced to walk the beat after many occurances.
- xbar 4y agoIn 2015, the FBI tallied 114 Anti-Asian hate crimes. In 2016, the FBI tallied 113 Anti-Asian hate crimes, a 1% decrease. In 2017, the FBI tallied 128 Anti-Asian hate crimes, a 12% increase. In 2018, the FBI tallied 149 Anti-Asian hate crimes, a 14% increase In 2019, the FBI tallied 161 Anti-Aisan hate crimes, a 7% increase. In 2020, the FBI tallied 279 Anit-Asian hate crimes, a 42% increase. I tend to believe the assertion that hate crimes are always under-reported in the Asian American community. The 42% spike is a big jump that probably feels even bigger within that community, as a result. Interestingly, from 2001 to 2010, Anti-Asian hate crime was higher, generally in the 200 range, with 2001 beating out 2020 at 280 tallied Anti-Asian hate crimes.
- windsignaling 4y agoYou say this as if you are witnessing other hate crimes on the regular. Is that true? Crimes against Asians tend to be taken less seriously and tend not to be classified as hate crimes even when there is a racial component. - balsam 4y agoThe graph only goes up to 2020. Here is the correct graph showing the spike. https://phys.org/news/2022-02-anti-asian-violence-spiked-pandemic-blue-state.html https://phys.org/news/2022-02-anti-asian-violence-spiked-pan...
