I would be really surprised if there has been any Shakespeare curriculum in the past 30 years (at minimum) that was solely based on reading the text of the plays without any performance elements. Certainly my experience was that we watched film adaptations, went and saw a stage performance, etc. as well as reading scenes aloud in class.
