Rural Counties Are Booming, but Can It Last?

- mindcrime 4y agoYeah, there's kind of a fuzzy line between "rural" and "remote" or whatever. I expect quite a few people would like to get "out of the city" to some extent, but I'm not sure how many of them long to live in, say, a remote part of Montana, hundreds of miles from much of anything aside from farms and cattle. It seems like there's a "sweet spot" that is "just rural enough" while still being close enough to a city to allow the occasional trip when it's needed. Those areas will probably continue to boom for a while.

- ladyattis 4y agoI think the reason for this reversal is that there's probably enough opportunities to move into areas not within the suburban sprawl. And not just for remote jobs but probably several supporting jobs across various industries. It would be nice to see this trend continue since honestly until the US government repeals its HUD social housing restrictions there's really no reason to keep packing people into poorly managed cities (regardless of who's in charge btw). Mind you, I think if this reversal persists there might be some major, but not obvious changes to the political and economic dynamics involved.
- bcrl 4y agoAs fibre networks expand, there are more and more jobs that can be done remotely in the county. Personally, I love being able to go for an hour walk out back in the bush with the only thing around being the sounds and sights of nature. There's something very calming and refreshing about the experience that's impossible to replicate in a city. Trees have so much more detail than a screen can replicate.
