Is DALL-E 2's work remarkable if you saw it on art station? No, it's just remarkable because of who made it.
- masswerk 4y agoAs an artist – i.e., judged by artistic criteria – DALL-E 2 is rather terrible. The other way round, if getting basic harmonics right is your criterium for good music, there is no problem with computer generated music. I guess, it's for the additional temporal dimension of music that forces us to consider the internal cohesion (and motivation) of a piece and the fact that audiences tend to be more exposed to music in everyday life that there's this huge perceived gap. Also, consider the difference in challenges. I've never heard of someone instructing an AI by "a short series of bars in the style of Beethoven with a fire siren in it", and then going, "yeah, this is a fire siren, this is great music!" There are certainly more criteria than this to be satisfied for this being considered great art. (In theory, this applies to visual arts quite the same, but we tend to be satisfied at a much lower level, like, "yes, it's a fire engine!") (That said, there has been this long-nursed idea in art theory that music would be the highest of all arts, for being both the most abstract one and also the most direct one. One may assume that a higher degree of abstraction would favor computer generated content, the emotional dimension, however, may give it away more easily.)
- gnulinux 4y ago> What percentage of human generated music is impressive? I'm sorry to break it to you but this just sounds like you're not a music person. The answer for me is close to 95% I find most music I hear interesting e.g. most music I listen to on Spotify can be classified as impressive as I derived adequate amount of artistic enjoyment out of it to be impressed.
