How to Financially Prepare for an Economic Slowdown
- dontbenebby 4y agoWhat if I never really had stable housing or employment at a fair wage for 12 months even since the last recession? What if I've felt trapped behind enemy lines since 9/11 due to decisions made before I was born, a choice I did not "opt in" to? Should my "preparation" be liquidating my meager retirement fund into cash and preparing to move from hostel to hostel as World War III spins up since I'm old enough I almost certainly will not be drafted? I could do a PhD to stall some time, but I am perfectly capable of working in industry, folks just make emotional decisions to only connect me with roles that keep me precarious so I can work on their grants, and I'm not sure how to break out of that cycle absent literally retreating to a cabin in the woods of Appalachia with a satellite dish on the roof like some sort of "cyber Ted Kazynski" (which is how I was apparently perceived the last time I floated that idea.) (All the cults I know of that offer free housing don't currently admit men, so if anyone has suggestions based on the above, feel free to chime in.)
