“Print” Is the Only Debug Tool You Need
- PennRobotics 4y ago* for native software For microcontrollers, my go-to is a debugger (for complicated/large code or when real-time trace is needed e.g. moving parts) or blinky LED (simple code or tight memory constraints). print() is pretty far down on the list unless I'm flashing via USB and also already using serial communication. Disclaimer: I build hardware debuggers and am obviously biased.
- dtagames 4y agoAfter more than 25 years in the biz, I agree completely. Debuggers are great and occasionally needed, but for everyday debugging I just write to the console or dump different output right into the web UI. Have debugging output in the exact same context as real output is also very helpful! That is, the debugging text and graphics will have the same fonts, placement, etc as the real code.
