Why do your SW engineers need to do so much ops work that knowing it makes them "carry the team"? The best programmers I know - who are carrying their teams - don't know any ops whatsoever, and don't have any need for it.
- buster 4y agoI think the comment does not mean that you need to know dev and ops very well to carry your team, but that's a hint at a very good and skilled person (unicorn) who probably carries his team. I don't think its meant exclusively to be only good if you know everything.
- uberduper 4y agoThis is correct. I don't really know why I included the statement at all. It certainly doesn't apply to me. If I was half as good at software development as I am at ops/sre, I'd be making a lot more money as a dev.
