By this same logic then we can't let the US get away with invading the rest of the world just because they can afford their debts.

Consider that they might just be trying to understand your code of values and whether you're capable of walking the walk according to the same moral principle that you're so eagerly preaching them with. Has justice been done to the past victims of the US aggression? Has punishment reached their perpetrators?
