Interview: “The Automat,“ which was ”the coolest cafeteria of them all“
- _alex_ 4y agoIf you find yourself in Amsterdam, there’s an automat chain all over the city called Febo. I really like it.
- Doxin 4y agoBasically any dutch snack bar that's not an American brand is going to have an automat. It's such a good format, while you're waiting for your fries to get made you can pull a snack from the automat. I'm honestly kinda baffled why McDonalds hasn't gotten in on this, it's a near perfect fit. Just imagine getting a big mac in seconds instead of minutes.

- jimhi 4y agoReminds me of milk bars in Poland. I imagine the Automat was similar: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_mleczny https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bar_mleczny Very delicious and cheap. Entire place is like a cafeteria.

- joshbode 4y agoThis reminds me of the sadly defunct Automaten (http://www.automatenbar.de/ http://www.automatenbar.de/) in Berlin from the early 2000s. This was a members-only club (I think it was like 10 euro per year) that was a hacker and party space, accessible only if you had a mag-strip card, and completely hidden in plain sight. Inside was a number of pre-euro vending machines (automats) that required you to use Automarken (not coincidentally the same size and weight as the Deutschmark coin). Inside the automats, apart from snacks and drinks, were an eclectic mix of handmade items that you could buy - a bit like a physical Etsy.
