He sounds mentally ill. I actually would have not been surprised if he shot himself or slit his wrists, but picking an unpleasant way to die doesn't seem like something he'd do. I wouldn't assume he'd never commit suicide because he got a tattoo saying he'd never commit suicide -- people say lots of things. But if you look at his life and work, you see someone suffering from depression and substance abuse -- someone in pain. People in pain usually kill themselves in ways aimed at not existing anymore, not prolonging it. (I did a minor in psychology in both undergrad and my aborted PhD, and have struggled with depression myself, so I can put myself in his shoes. Existing is exhausting.)
