I am sooooo happy that MATE exists. I'm sure there's plenty of things people dislike about it, but to me, it hits the sweet spot. Maybe this is just because I've been using MATE and before that Gnome 2 for more than 15 years now, but over the years, I have come to believe this is a value in itself. It's why Windows 8 made me pretty mad - the good old desktop of Windows 95 - Windows 7 was not perfect, but I have spent enough time using it I no longer needed to think about how this thing or that thing worked, it was almost muscle-memory. When I wake up in the middle of the night and need to visit the bathroom, I can navigate my apartment without turning the light on. I feel that desktop environments are similar - familiarity beats clever design hands down, so I prefer small, incremental changes to "re-inventing" things.
