Modern GNOME is a liability to Linux desktop usage. It's usually fine, but can turn into a clunky, shitty mess at completely random and unpredictable points in your usage of it. The average person doesn't want to deal with this. It doesn't make their life easier or better. "Don't do X" isn't a real answer.
I don't dislike it because it's just different and I don't want to learn -- I've used GNOME 2, GNOME 3, Unity, KDE, Openbox, the Windows DE, and the OSX/macOS DE for a year or more each. GNOME 3 and the macOS DE are the standout bad ones of the bunch, but macOS has the excuse of a long design history that it has been continually improving on, while GNOME 3 was a step backwards from what GNOME 2 was 10 years before its release.
