I agree with both of your points, but I would argue that the blog post is an example of overspecialization. In some roles generalists are better than specialists, and I think technical writing is in this category. Then the question becomes: how to get general knowledge? I think learning on the job is suboptimal for most cases. And I agree about the resource issues in journalism, but I think this is a secondary issue to the problem of having a fundamental understanding of what you are writing about.
