Why the U.S. leads other wealthy nations in deaths of despair
- more_corn 4y agoBecause healthcare is absurdly expensive. Because we have no social safety net. Because we don’t offer sick leave. Because we’re alienated from our families and we fail to build intentional communities. Pretty sure we’re all aware of these problems.
- mbrodersen 4y agoI agree. And it won’t change. Because the US is a Corporate State thinly disguised as a Democracy.

- UncleEntity 4y ago> While deaths of despair skyrocket in America — most significantly among white, middle-aged men with low income and limited education living in rural areas… If your whole lifestyle goes away, you’re middle-aged and have limited education what exactly will maternity care and lower college tuition do for you? Nobody’s going to hire some 40 something new college graduate (assuming they can even manage to get a college degree) your farm or manufacturing job is gone to the robots or overseas and there is absolutely no support network for males in the US. Like nothing, to even suggest it is a hate crime. So they drink or use drugs or just outright commit suicide because they are a failure and don’t have anywhere to turn. Such is life for the oppressors in modern society. One small sliver of hope is if you’re a veteran the VA won’t turn you away because suicide rates are very high among veterans and they want to help. Sure they’ll lock you in the psych ward with crackheads who eat all the sugar packets and give you a Vietnam veteran roommate who thinks they can intimidate a former paratrooper because they’re mad the wife had them locked up but at least they care enough to help. White? Male? Not a veteran? Sorry, dude, you’re fucked…
