How is Doom 3 a top quality engine? I would say CryEngine 2 or Frostbite 2 are.

  Top quality != latest tech. Id tech 4 is a top quality 7 year old engine.

    I think the success of Minecraft proves that the latest engine technology is not critical to the success of a game.

      Minecraft allows for fully modifiable 3D environments which no other popular games have. So it is the latest technology, much unlike Doom 3.

        Right I totally agree and it's extremely fun. I guess I was thinking that the speed and graphics aren't as visually snazzy but the fans (like me) don't care about that.

    Would you say the same thing if it were the year 2030? Does Pacman run with a top notch engine? It was certainly optimized well for its time.
