One reason I choose Apple is because of this. I know there is one possible egress browser on the platform which goes through the same control channels as anything else whether it’s embedded in an app or standalone. The moment it’s open then every app will ship their own embedded engines which circumvent the controls. Controls being screen time (whitelisting) and centralised blocking lists.
If anyone is not happy they should perhaps go and use Android?
Ah no we banned Android because despite all the security controls it was possible to just browse anything on a kiosk tablet by using the a random link to public internet on the about box of an app which was updated by the vendor.
- FrozenSynapse 4y agoWhy would anyone want such a closed system? I cannot stand iOS because of this...
- iasay 4y agoSimply because it abstracts away all of the problems I don’t want to care about and enables all the solutions I do care about at the same time. And most importantly it just works.
- Avamander 4y agoThat's not entirely true though, a lot of apps "embed" Safari which does break things. Such as opening a specific website's links in native app directly. Not all apps allow disabling it either.
- iasay 4y agoEmbedded safari is subject to the same controls. I’ve tested it. Also you can open specific links in a browser instead of an app easily. Just hold finger on the link.
- Avamander 4y agoLong tap takes as long as it takes to open the embedded browser and to tap the Safari button. Equally inefficient and annoying.
