> Past swings away from OS default browsers have hinged on the superior features, better performance, improved security, and superior site compatibility. Marketing and distribution play a prominent role but have been indecisive in recent browser battles. The leads of OS incumbents are not insurmountable because browsers are commodities with relatively low switching costs. Better products tend to win.
The point that people pick browsers for "superior site compatibility" is not a minor thing. And it arguably undermines the statement that "better browsers tend to win".
Because "superior site compatibility" is affected by what browsers the majority uses. This can build a moat for a bad browser (IE6) or it can hijack web standardization (chrome).
The second point, hijacking of web standardization, is a more topical problem. Chrome is doing this, and chrome is developed by google. This is allowing google to push changes to how the web works unilaterally. This is bad.
