Show HN: Brave Goggle that upranks news sources that are politically centrist
- upwardbound 4y agoSee also this discussion yesterday about the Brave Goggles feature in general, and information about how you can make them: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31837986 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31837986
- upwardbound 4y agoIf you don't have the Brave browser, you can still try this Goggle if you use the test page here: https://search.brave.com/goggles?goggles_id=https%3A%2F%2Fraw.githubusercontent.com%2Fpreambleai%2Fbrave-goggles%2Fmain%2Fcentrist-news https://search.brave.com/goggles?goggles_id=https%3A%2F%2Fra...
- addcninblue 4y agoAlso, you can add a Goggle-enabled Brave as a search engine in Chrome by using the following url: https://search.brave.com/goggles?q=%s+&source=web&goggles_id=https%253A%252F%252Fraw.githubusercontent.com%252Fpreambleai%252Fbrave-goggles%252Fmain%252Fcentrist-news&nav=site (The %s stands in for the search, and the goggles_id specifies the link above.)
- r721 4y agoI have seen pretty wild conspiracy theories on consortiumnews.com/thelastamericanvagabond.com/globalresearch.ca/informationclearinghouse.info, so personally I'm not sure you selected good sources to boost. UPD globalresearch.ca was even included in "Pillars of Russia's Disinformation and Propaganda Ecosystem" report: https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Pillars-of-Russia%E2%80%99s-Disinformation-and-Propaganda-Ecosystem_08-04-20.pdf https://www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Pillars-of-...
- upwardbound 4y agoThank you very much for the heads-up. I updated the Goggle to remove those 4 sites from the boost list. Thank you so much for the feedback, very very much appreciated.
- NaturalPhallacy 4y agoAdmittedly snarky: You sound like you believe in the Trump-Russia conspiracy theory! More reasonable: I recognized consortiumnews.com because that's where famous NSA code breaker and whistleblower Bill Binney published his debunk of the of the "Russia hacked the DNC" hoax: https://consortiumnews.com/2017/07/24/intel-vets-challenge-russia-hack-evidence/ https://consortiumnews.com/2017/07/24/intel-vets-challenge-r... So personally I think they picked at least one excellent source. I can't speak to the others. >UPD globalresearch.ca was even included in "Pillars of Russia's Disinformation and Propaganda Ecosystem" report: Ahh yes, because the US government would never lie, 7 years after it became legal to do so: https://www.mintpressnews.com/planting-stories-in-the-press-lifting-of-us-propaganda-ban-gives-new-meaning-to-old-song/237493/ https://www.mintpressnews.com/planting-stories-in-the-press-... Russian media influence on the US doesn't hold a candle to domestic media that is frequently found to be heavily biased to be pro establishment, to outright wrong. Russia is a red herring.
- spacemanmatt 4y ago> Russian media influence on the US doesn't hold a candle to domestic media that is frequently found to be heavily biased to be pro establishment, to outright wrong. Russia is a red herring. Russia did attempt and intend to interfere with the 2016 election and they will do it again. Their unregistered agents are still getting convicted.
- throwoutway 4y agoThat doesn’t seem to successfully debunk it. Maybe to just present a counterpoint? But hackers are known to cover their tracks and mislead so..
- threatofrain 4y agoWhat's wrong with just using a news aggregator? Follow stories and evaluate inter-rater reliability rather than any specific news outlet. I've found Google News pretty reliable for that.
- spacemanmatt 4y agoI've found Google News reliable at promoting AMP sites and little else.
- Rovoska 4y agoOP is a complete fool to think that there is such a thing as non politically leaning news sources. Such a thing cannot, will not, and has never existed.
- upwardbound 4y agoI understand; the hope is to achieve a pool of sources that have minimal bias individually AND whose overall biases cancel each other out. I.E. ideally we can find 50% of sources that are slightly right of center and 50% that are slightly left of center so they balance out. Does this seem more tractible?
