Well said.
I remember a nurse telling me I was selfish and my suicide attempt was a waste of resources in the ER. During the same attempt, a therapist told me that my family was lying to me about drug abuse in the family (the question was something like, Does anyone in your family have a substance abuse problem? Parents, grandparents, etc.? No? Your parents are lying to you.) In the first case, I left the ER and made an appointment with a therapist. That obviously didn't work out and my GP recommended another.
Clinical depression sucks. I've had it most of my life. And while my mom was good about encouraging me to talk to someone when I was in high school, it was hard to find a person with whom I clicked. I ended up with a school counselor and while I think it helped, I would have preferred someone who was not on staff at my school. It was only in my late 20s with the above-mentioned suicide attempt that I actually dealt with one of the major underlying issues (I was molested as a child by several family friends). That work, hard as it was, was a major breakthrough. And it was then I was put on anti-depressants.
But to this day, 30 years later, the depression outsmarts the meds periodically and suicidal thoughts creep in. I'm much more aware of the pattern now (took long enough!) and there's a path forward that doesn't include actually making plans. If I talk with anyone, it's with my husband. And he's like a deer in headlights, God love him!, but my mom is 80 and she's been through enough with me!
