I'm far from an expert on this, but I do know that many classical Chinese texts also had very well defined structures, including rhyming patterns. These are often very good sources for figuring out, vaguely, how an ancient word would be pronounced. It's certainly a powerful tool for discerning between multiple candidate pronunciations.
