I agree with you 100%. Slack is the most beautiful useless application ever made. It looks great, I hate every single thing about it. The only thing that does work and lets me focus at development at hand is turning Slack off entirely. I know about notifications, but the mental pressure of having to check if $important_person wrote something or not just gets on my nerves.
