We don't yet understand the endocannabinoid system in great detail, but all signs point to it having critical roles in a number of physiological processes including memory, mood, fertility, immune response, appetite etc. Cannabinoid receptors 'don't do much' without the help of of some 19% THC sativa in the same way the dopaminergic system doesn't do much without the help of methamphetamine. However, that 'not much' is actually necessary for us to function.
