The more I think about this, the more I like it. It cleanly splits the problem into two testable questions of "am I using this API correctly?" and "is my own logic correct?", without adding tedious complexity. I'm generally a fan of simple wrappers for APIs when you find yourself writing a bunch of redundant code, and testability is a nice advantage.
