Ask HN: write for your own blog or to give away ideas for press coverage

Hi HN, I've heard people recommend writing articles to pitch to bloggers so they can use them as their own. The benefit being you build a relationship with the press and I possibly get a link back to your site. The alternative is to write the articles for your own site. I suppose with the latter you potentially have less reach but get the links for yourself. What's any ones experience or thoughts on this?
