Probably we have to start again with something different in the same way as the web replaced all the other protocols (gopher, usenet etc). I’m not what that looks like but it should be cleaner, simpler, open and blockchain-free.
- PretzelPirate 4y ago> I’m not what that looks like but it should be cleaner, simpler, open and blockchain-free. You’re asking for an open network and then putting restrictions on individuals right away by saying they can’t use blockchains on it. Some people want to use blockchains (or any other technology) and an open network shouldn’t put restrictions on how people participate.
- dkersten 4y agoBut it shouldn’t itself be based on blockchains. That is, if you want to use them, that’s fine and up to you, but if you don’t want to use them, then that should also be a valid choice. The core technology shouldn’t be based on blockchain and should work just as well without.

- ardacinar 4y agoA blockchain-free protocol is not a protocol with "no you can't do anything blockchain related on this" restriction. A blockchain-free protocol is one where the protocol itself does not involve a blockchain. Like HTTP, or FTP, or Gopher, or IRC, SMTP etc.
- bobajeff 4y agoYes, I've been wanting something that's just a rich document but designed around accessibility with no styles or JavaScript.
- fbanon 4y agoYes, but we need to ensure that it stays JavaScript-free rich document format. We would need to ensure that it's impossible for bad (and rich!) actors to introduce their Turing-complete tracking machinery into this new document format when it becomes popular.
- jgilias 4y agoFor what it's worth, there's Gemini. You can't really call it rich document though, as styling is left to the user consuming the content.
- bobajeff 4y agoWell I don't want styling just document structure/description (eg. H1-8, Title, EM, P, IMG, Author, Article, Forum-Post, Search-Result) and yes I want images too so Gemini goes way too far my uses.
- postalrat 4y agoImages complicate the accessible requirement.
- bobajeff 4y agoTrue, it's still worth doing though. That's one of the reasons for alt, longdesc, and aria-describedby attributes.
- postalrat 4y agoWhat image formats will be support? Plain old 256 color uncompressed bitmaps? Why leave an existing protocol and easy accessibility just for a few images.
- bobajeff 4y agoI'm not sure I know how to explain it. Images just seem a basic part of content. I just don't think it's acceptable to have to open up an external application to view images in a document. Any way I'm not against image galleries and video sites either. I just want control over how I consume those. If I want the page read to me it should be possible. If I want to consume it on a tiny 2x2" e-ink display that should be doable.
