What’s the envisioned scenario?
Someone writing proprietary software uses an AI tool and unwittingly inserts a few lines of GPLed code verbatim.
The software gets shipped.
Somehow the original author of those lines of code finds out about this and…
Then what happens?
- pabs3 4y agoThe other way around. The AI tool gets trained on leaked/public/etc proprietary software, someone writing GPL code uses the AI tool to write copyleft code based on the proprietary code, perhaps including some verbatim copying.
- WalterGR 4y agoWait, so... then what happens? The potential that proprietary code 'leaks out' a few lines at a time into FOSS? Or that it turns willful copyright infringement into mere copyright infringement? :)
- pabs3 4y agoGitHub has said that using CoPilot isn't copyright infringement, so the idea is to turn proprietary code into copyleft code, in whatever way CoPilot allows, even if it is a few lines at a time.
