If you're thinking that way thats not how you get in. You usually have to start actually doing the work then you kind of earn your place if you're better at it than others as the team grows. Typically across tech startups its pretty much the same, unless you come from a sales background.
There isn't room typically in a startup to start senior and then build the team out, it usually starts the other way with a team thats building something, achieves PM-fit & then grows/expands that out to scale.

- rodentflamingo 4y agoI'd love to hear more from your perspective
- rodentflamingo 4y agothanks for your reply. I do not disagree with what you said, however I do not understand,i.e., how other folks landed a job as VP of Engineering, in ~20-40 people startups. Like, is it a critical timing factor? Do you have to be in a certain circle or know the founders? As part of my processess I managed to talk to VPs or CTOs and -my fault maybe- I could not really understand what at least half of those people bring to the table both in technical and/or management terms.
- ahmadmijot 4y agoI've been parachuted to become a founder of a startup, holding a C suite title. From my experiences, in the beginning yes you need to be in a certain circle, know the founders or just become one (founder or VP position). This is a route for someone (like me) who didn't have prior experience in top managerial level in a startup/company.
- rodentflamingo 4y agothank you for sharing your experience, that is also a route I am considering (not out of reactivess lol) however it would require a different kind of effort (visa and such). What "professionally hurts" me more is that my current management experiences seems to be disregarder in favor of my technical background. Either I am being delusional at this point, even though I am pretty sure I can bring quite a lot to a startup in terms of org and growth, or I am not reading this right (and I am thankful for the replies in this post that are helping my observing this situation from a different angles)
