What you think makes the US system unique (anyone can get elected) is actually standard in democracies. In fact, it's arguably easier for people without significant financial backing to be elected in most Western countries than in the US. And that's not even mentioning countries with far more direct democracy than the US, like Switzerland (the actual contender for the 'most democratic nation on earth' title).
