I'm not in the know, but what little I know of science history tells me that entrenchment is a regular occurrence in the sciences, going back to Copernicus and Co. I suppose capitalism has fueled it to one extent or another. Depending on your outlook, that could be a good thing or a bad thing. In our defense, at least we're not burning people at the stake for it anymore.
