For anyone who hasn't listened yet, Four Tet is really good. A lot of base in very organic sounding samples from analogue instruments like hand pans, chimes, xylophones, steel pan drums and similar kind of percussion but it's still pretty much techno/house electronic music (not tech house) [1]. His newer stuff [2] is starting to sound a bit more synth based but it's still really top work.
I'm glad they're doing something with fighting to get proper compensation, the industry really needs to check themselves in terms of respect for who's out there doing the hard creative work. Way to be a repellent to talent, Domino Records!

- smcl 4y agoYeah music like Four Tet is really nice for coding. I can also suggest Arms And Sleepers if that's your thing.
- BonoboIO 4y agoThx for the recommendation. Arms and sleepers is really nice. I realized that I like a song from four tet (lush) already. I think you would like Bonobo and Tycho for coding too
- jamal-kumar 4y agoWhen it comes to writing code I find the best is honestly just listening to mixes so that I am not too distracted trying to pick out music. Usually I have to remind myself to listen to it again when I'm not working to get track names though because that can be a real mission sometimes
- HKH2 4y agoI have a playlist system that is primarily controlled with 2 buttons - pause/resume and skip. No UI is needed. Tracks are automatically selected by their value combined with how little they have been played. The faster a track is skipped, the more it will be devalued. Tracks that are under the value threshold get automatically skipped. A track that doesn't get skipped will keep its value, but if it gets played too much, other less-played tracks will have priority. I have a button to show me a track name if I really want to know (or I can look at the logs), otherwise all words (lyrics, track names, file names etc.) are ignored. If I find a track does have lyrics/speaking in it, I will tag it as such and move on.
- jamal-kumar 4y agoOne thing I see is people skipping tracks before they even have a chance to get going. Most electronic music is arranged in a way for DJs to mix them, not necessarily in a way that your average listener will appreciate, so fast passing on a track from people who don't spin music at parties is one of the most annoying things to me as someone who does this as a side gig
- HKH2 4y agoI'm not a DJ but there seem to be fairly neutral ways of starting a track that are much more involved than just a kick. Then again, I think people who skip EDM tracks are bound to do it anyway. A lot of people seem to listen to music just for the lyrics/celebrities.
- technonerd 4y agodvs1 started a genius idea to help pay artist [1]. All the DJ has to do is import his playlist and enter the amount they want to share with the artist that were played in a given set. Not only is this man an absolute master behind the decks like you need to add him to your bucket list to see him hes that good. The dude reeks in passion for music and it shows in his DJ skills, it shows in the sound systems and warehouse he built. But he is also out there trying to help improve the scene. - emptysongglass 4y agoGood Lord what a good find. I'm asking because of your username—for people into the trance revival scene that's sprung up around DJs like Courtesy are there any artists or other DJs today you'd recommend? I spent my early twenties going to DVS1 and Ben Klock sets. Past the drugs the music was (and remains) foundational to me. To avoid making a valueless comment I can also suggest resonate.is! It's a music co-op that pays 45% to the artists, by far the most. I listen to the #ambient tag at work.
- jamal-kumar 4y agoDJ Heartstring are fun. It's actually two guys from Berlin who mostly spin their own productions [1] I wasn't aware of Courtesy until your mention, but very good indeed in that direction. You got any more?
