It's problematic to only let government or entrenched institutions deliver uncensored content. Powerful groups have a habit of shaping what is "educational" to fit their goals.
- epgui 4y agoThe goal of a university is to promote learning. It’s not very nefarious.
- jhugo 4y agoUniversities in HK will soon eliminate any mention of the period when it was part of the British empire from their History programmes. That's one example among many. In general, the establishment teaches what is convenient for the establishment to teach.
- epgui 4y agoIf this is true (and I assume it is for the sake of argument), then it's pretty obvious that there's an element of coercion at play. This is not happening because the HK universities decided that they should do so. My comment obviously presupposes that a university is acting autonomously or independently, and this assumption largely holds true across space and time: even throughout History and in challenging political regimes, universities have tended to be at the forefront of academic freedom.
- lupire 4y agoNot everyone who promotes learning is a university.
- epgui 4y agoThat is true, but irrelevant to my comment.
