Uh-huh. In 1999, Google was a pre-revenue startup with probably 50 employees and a tiny number of early users. In the unlikely case that they'd somehow specifically targeted the author for "un-platforming", how likely is it that the author would have even noticed, let alone gotten a reply talking about requiring a "10-figure net worth" to be listened to from a company that itself had only raised low 8-figures of VC.
- krolden 4y agoYeah that line really threw me off. My earliest memories of google were ~1999 and it was JUST a search engine. At the time altavista was still superior anyway. Dont know what the hell the author is talking about there.
- bequanna 4y agoImagined/fabricated grievances to underscore whatever point she is trying to make. It is unacceptable that accounts are locked or deleted by huge tech cos with no recourse. Sometimes there actually is a political agenda, more often it is just some random, unfortunate AI screw up. This example sounds a lot more like the latter but the author (a professional victim) is trying very hard to convince us it is the former.
- jeffbee 4y agoIt isn't an "AI screw-up". They posted a 90-minute video containing explicit photographic depictions of sex acts, without noting that the content was possibly inappropriate for some ages. Some system correctly took down. Now it's back up, with the correct age notification in place. The lesson here is not about AI, it's about how correctly managing your videos is a lot easier than whining on substack about how oppressed you are.
- jeffbee 4y agoThat detail and every other relevant factual aspect of the article is fabricated. That this is the top item on HN shows how widespread and automatic the "canceled by google" meme has become, even when the complainant is clearly just making it up. It's hard to imagine that this person even got twenty emails from bewildered colleagues, when the view stats on Youtube indicate that this channel gets about 5 views per day.

- duxup 4y agoThat certainly impacted the believability of the overall story. Not saying the rest of the article is false, I don't know, but that line is so out of place that I wonder.
