Deserved? I think that is a bit strong. Yes, they should have anticipated the possibility, and, maybe they have! Who knows?
Saying that individuals deserve the bad actions of platforms is ridiculous. If Microsoft decided to delete files in your home directory, did you deserve it because you weren't using your own version of linux that you compiled from the ground up? No. And I don't think you are really advocating for that.
The reality is that we need a better set of laws to hold platforms accountable to their users. and we need to advocate that our government create one.
edit: word substitution for clarity.
- vanderZwan 4y agoNot to mention the part where it's kind of ridiculous to suggest that a library would not maintain proper archives. There isn't a single paragraph in the text suggesting that "their only copy was on a proprietary video platform", to quote GP. Just that YT terminated their account.
- majkinetor 4y agoYes. I deserve that if Microsoft decides to do so. One should take care of its data and not trust anyone.
- abakker 4y agoI think you might misunderstand what "deserve" means. You do not deserve to go bankrupt if you don't have health insurance. you do not deserve to lose your life savings if someone robs your bank. Yes, people have a responsibility to manage their money, their health, and their data loss risk. Failing in that responsibility does not mean that those consequences are somehow moral imperatives.
