High fossil fuel prices are good for the planet–here’s how to keep it that way
- hunter-gatherer 4y agoI'm not an expert in this sector and won't pretend to be here, but becuause both of these are on the HN front page right now, I'd just comment that this article seems much more convincing. https://nypost.com/2022/06/19/fossil-fuel-price-spikes-are-causing-pain-but-little-climate-payoff/ https://nypost.com/2022/06/19/fossil-fuel-price-spikes-are-c...
- sharemywin 4y agoFirst the article is flat wrong: How much of U.S. energy consumption and electricity generation comes from renewable energy sources? In 2021, renewable energy sources accounted for about 12.2% of total U.S. energy consumption and about 20.1% of electricity generation. Not 9%. Second higher gas prices won't effect energy decision which seems to be one of the assumptions of the article? It takes a lot of time for industrial energy to change course.
- dane-pgp 4y agoIs it possible to increase the price of fossil fuels by increasing demand for plastic (and then burying/sequestering rather than burning that plastic at the end of its useful life)? I know that plastics tend to use different parts of the crude oil mix than typical hydrocarbon fuels, but I'm wondering how the economics of that could work, with the right incentives.
