I really liked "a book of abstract algebra" as a first step to learning more advanced topics. It isn't as much about deriving proofs, but moreso about how to think of mathematics in terms of abstract objects that are combined together.

In mathematics, it’s important, for example, to see how things are connected, and that’s what proofs help with. Without this mathematics turns into a largely useless collection of facts - useless because an isolated fact or a formula can rarely be used as is.
