By old standards it's a huge server with a gigabyte of RAM memory and tens of GB of disk (maybe even SSD). Traditional text BBS's ran on 8 bit microcomputers with 64KB of memory and maybe some floppy disks, or perhaps a hard disk in the tens of megabytes, I thought.
I do like the idea of raw text. Leopold Kronecker famously said that God created ASCII, but Unicode is the work of man. Or something like that.
- speedgoose 4y agoCan't be him even with a time machine, ASCII is missing 4 letters of his language.
- avlevy-ms 4y agogp was making a reference to Kronecker's quote "Die ganzen Zahlen hat der liebe Gott gemacht, alles andere ist Menschenwerk" (God made the integers, all else is the work of man)
- Karrot_Kream 4y agoBut most BBSes were heavy on ANSI and ANSI art so I don't think "raw text" is an accurate recollection.
