"Mammalian brains are the only things in the universe that we currently recognize as capable of sentience" - mm hmm. Poor birds.
Anyway, language is clearly not necessary for sentience, nor is it sufficient. I think it's just as likely that sentience is caused by a mystical ethereal "soul," made of ectoplasm that we can't see, than that it's caused by a graph of nodes and vertices with lots of edges.
