Richard Wolff: Marxism and Communism – Lex Fridman Podcast [video]
- charlescearl 4y agoThere’s also David Harvey’s Anti-Capitalist Chronicles http://davidharvey.org/2022/01/new-podcast-david-harveys-anti-capitalist-chronicles/amp/ http://davidharvey.org/2022/01/new-podcast-david-harveys-ant... There are of course many Marxist podcasts, but i find it interesting that Harvey’s always attempting to wrestle with AI and other technologies in the context of thinking through Marxism in our time.
- ahelwer 4y agoOne of the best books I read over the past few years was Democracy at Work by Wolff. I'm in my 30s now and have some real savings from working during my 20s, enough that I could conceivably have a go at starting a business to solve some problems that I see. Unfortunately I can't think of my relationship with the hypothetical employees of this hypothetical business as anything other than exploitative. The book introduced me to the idea of a worker-self-directed cooperative (which is a different from your local grocery co-op or credit union) which might dissolve such a relationship. The only tech companies I've heard of who are structured similar to this are a consulting/product company called Informal Systems and Motion Twin, the developer of the game Dead Cells. I'm sure such a business has its unique problems but after a decade of seeing the dysfunction inside "regular" companies my mind is pretty open in this regard.
- sn0w_crash 4y agoCommunism’s body count (so far): 55 million - China 20 million - USSR 2 million - Cambodia 2 million - North Korea 1 million - Vietnam 100k - Latin America There have been few ideas tested at such massive scale as extensively as this and delivered such horrible outcomes. Yet when brought up to its adherents you’ll often hear “that wasn’t real communism” or “ideology doesn’t kill people” or “because capitalist nations intervened” or something else off a laundry list of excuses. I’m a huge fan of Lex but I’ll pass on this religion and I’m not interested in over-analyzing it.
- CrackerNews 4y agoSure, but the other systems can also be considered religions with their own atrocities. With the way things are going, I would think it to be prudent to analyze why things happen and what was the good and what was the bad.
