I wrote a library to parse plain text notes, sowhat [0] that delivers a lot of semantic and structural information. Notes for me solve lots of problems in my routine that wouldnt work with a markdown implementation: tasks, budgets, time management, reading lists, work log, simple calculations that operate on the global notes environment, etc. Sowhat handles transactional data well, you could implement double-entry for example with relative ease. Other things include: links, events, quotes, tasks, formulas and a few organizational elements. I combine these elements in different ways depending on the problem.
