It was the relentless debt hijacking to value, and the complex derivatives which they gamed to make other wealth appear and disappear, the actual trades as you say did nothing in aggregate but the bubble of belief wrapped around them certainly did, when the regulator stepped in and demanded evidence to back the value claims.
